Parenting Coordination

Parenting Coordination, by Cassandra Kalpaxis

Parenting Coordination can help your client if they are going through a Parenting Dispute. It enables parents to navigate through their separation (or even after) with clarity and an expectation of what their time with the children will look like.

Parenting Coordination helps significantly in providing an external viewpoint (supported by an accreditation and years of experience in dealing with families and children) to minimise conflict and facilitate positive communication.

Parenting Coordination is very different to Mediation, and the most important differences for you to note include:

  • Parenting Coordination is not confidential and is reportable.

  • The parties’ behaviour will be subject to monitoring by the Parenting Coordinator.

  • The Parenting Coordinator can be compelled to produce their notes and to give evidence in Court.

  • The Parenting Coordinator’s role is not to be neutral but to assist the parties in understanding and having insight into how their behaviour impacts the children.

FAQ:

  • The Parenting Coordinator’s role is not to be neutral but to assist the parties in understanding and having insight into how their behaviour impacts the children.

Parenting Coordinators are effective problem solvers that provide strategies and tools to help parents deal with conflict so that parenting arrangements can be adhered to in the long term without the daily stress commonly associated with it.

The Parenting Coordinator’s role is to:

    • Assist the parties in resolving any disputes that may arise from Court Orders or a Parenting Plan.

    • Educate, coach and provide information to resolve conflict.

    • Encourage child-focused communication between the parties.

    • Assist the parties in better understanding their children's development and the physical and emotional impact of conflict.

    • Assist with day-to-day co-parenting issues such as email monitoring and setting ground rules for communication and interactions between the parties.

  • Fees for Parenting Coordination are $220 per client per hour (that is, $440/hour in total).

Costs are usually borne equally between the parties but if you and the other parent reach an alternative agreement, that is acceptable.

Parenting Coordination is generally conducted as a 2-hour joint session with the Parenting Coordinator at least once per month for a fixed period of whatever you and the other parent agree to (i.e. 6 months, 12 months, 2 years).

  • Parenting Coordinators bring their unique skillsets, experience and niche expertise to assist you during your dispute resolution journey, but Parenting Coordinators are independently different.

Parenting Coordinators are not Counsellors, Psychologists, Mediators, Lawyers, or Investigators, even though they may have qualifications in those areas of expertise.

Parenting Coordinators must be accredited and authorised to provide their services to you, much the same as a Mediator must be accredited according to a scheme or a Psychologist must comply with a code of conduct.
